Keeping Ahead of the SEO Curve

March 17th, 2010 by mcorley

SEO isn’t an exact science. It’s a lot more reliable than say, picking stocks, but when you work in an industry where the game changes so often that the goalpost is blurry, it’s more important than ever to keep ahead of all the developments that will change how you think and work. If we held onto the SEO practices used even three or four years ago, we’d be hopelessly out of date.

One factor in staying ahead of any industry is education. At WebDex Media, we make sure that we’re tracking all the SEO news, and keeping in touch with other leading industry experts. We join in discussions and take part in brainstorming sessions on how to offer newer and better internet marketing services to our clients. We don’t believe in sitting still.

Anyone interested in the optimization process for search engines should also stay informed. It’s a great way to keep expectations reasonable, and ensure that your business is getting the most possible return from your internet marketing investment. Being aware of the market as an online business owner is just as important as knowing the neighborhood of your brick and mortar store.

One site that we like to monitor is the Search Engine Journal. This site deals with a lot of current issues in the SEO industry, and reports often on the changes, practices, and mechanics of search engine optimization. We recently sent out some twitter links from this great blog, because we understand the importance of having a wide vision. Too many ideas in the same room can get a little narrow, and it’s important to add some fresh blood every now and again.

We’d love to know how our readers are educating themselves about SEO. What sites do you go to for your sources? Who do you read? What podcasts are you listening to? Tweet with us, or comment on the blog, and let us know what your go-to SEO sources are.

How Has SEO Changed In This Decade?

March 15th, 2010 by mcorley

With WebDex celebrating its tenth year as one of the leading Dallas SEO companies, we thought we’d take a look at what’s changed over the past ten years. Not only have we made changes for WebDex Media, but we’ve tracked the biggest changes across the entire industry of SEO and internet marketing. Here are some of the biggest shifts we’ve spotted in the past decade:

Google Dominance – Do you remember AltaVista? How about Lycos? Ask Jeeves? Excite? At the beginning of the 21st Century, we were using dozens of search engines. Now, we can narrow them down pretty effectively to Google, Yahoo, and Bing, and Google holds the largest slice of the market pie.

Black Hat and White Hat SEO – In the early days of SEO, many companies were thinking more about fooling search engines than they were about making good content. As the industry matured, White Hat SEO became the standard in good optimization, while Black Hat methods became the mark of unscrupulous companies out to make a quick buck at the expense of the client.

SEO means more than page rank – Around the middle of the decade, SEO companies began to realize that page rank was only a small portion of good SEO. SEO companies then became marketing professionals to keep up with the competition. We had to provide more than just a first place listing, we had to keep people coming back to a site again and again. This is the point at which internet marketing became far more than just managing a site’s code. Keyword rich content became key, as did the importance of staying on top of dozens of marketing channels at once.

The Preferred Channels – Early on, there was a lot of talk about getting pages submitted to directories. While this is still viable for some markets, submitting everything to a directory won’t do much good. Optimization now is all about diversity, and the best channels for content are blogs, social network sites, video sites, and other places where content can be easily shared and distributed.

The Social Media Boom – Social marketing is not only a way to keep people connected, but many companies forget that social media sites often incorporate small search engines of their own. YouTube sees a huge volume of searches on its site in a day, and YouTube videos are regularly ranked on Google. Twitter has a lightning fast real time search function, as do Facebook and LinkedIn. By choosing to leave Social Media marketing up to clients, many SEO companies are neglecting a rising aspect of internet marketing.

WebDex Media is poised along the cutting edge, and we intend to keep it that way by always looking forward.

Birthdays to Be Had at Pappadeux

March 10th, 2010 by Kristine Macabare

From L-R: Kristine (me!), Morgan, The Birthday Hat, Bruce, Jamie, Debbie, Christy, Beth, Paul, Vanessa, and Linda.

Yep, it’s birthday time! Or at least it was birthday time at lunch today.

We often have birthday lunches out at restaurants (or sometimes catered in) designated by the birthday celebrants. This month, Morgan and Vanessa are sharing their birthday so we went out to Pappadeux off I-35E and Northwest Highway. After the rain and brief hail storm this morning, we were very fortunate to have clear skies just in time for the drive.

By the way, see that funny looking thing on Morgan’s head in the picture? That, my friends, is what we call The Birthday Hat. And yes, it does need to be capitalized like that. It is the one item that is both loved an hated by staff members since wearing it is part of the Webdex birthday ritual. And because it’s Morgan’s first birthday with us, he had the honor of wearing it today.

Some people wear it all the time (Vanessa and I tend to wear it all day on our birthdays). Others just long enough to say they wore it and then give it back to Linda. And let me tell you, it is QUITE a conversation piece. Everywhere we go, we get compliments on the hat. “That hat is awesome! Where did you get it?” “We need to get a hat like that!” Once, we went to Abuelo’s for Bruce’s birthday, and as we were walking out of the restaurant, he was turning heads left and right. Don’t get me wrong, Bruce is a handsome man, but that hat made him look like James Bond (if James Bond wore a hat shaped like a birthday cake). And you know what? Something tells me that if 007 saw that hat, he would have no problems wearing it out in public ;)

Morgan’s Birthday Ambush

March 9th, 2010 by Kristine Macabare

Morgan was definitely surprised.

Happy birthday, Morgan! We have tradition here at Webdex that started a couple years ago where we ambush the birthday celebrant and trash decorate their cubicle :) Granted, Morgan might be the new kid around here, but that doesn’t grant him immunity.

Our mission first began by making sure the victim was out of the office by 6:00PM. Morgan occasionally works late, but to eliminate that risk, Linda sent an email saying everyone had to leave promptly at 6 because the carpets would be cleaned (kudos to Linda and Debbie for coming up with this one).

A Snapshot

February 17th, 2010 by Kristine Macabare

The staff gathers around the conference table for a catered lunch and our annual kickoff meeting.

Today was our annual company kickoff meeting, which Paul may or may not post about depending on his schedule (he’s a busy guy). We have these meetings once a year, usually near the beginning, to review the previous year and to talk about what to look forward to over the next year. After blessing the meal, we filled our plates buffet-style in Linda’s office where all the food was laid out. Lunch was catered by Dickey’s, which was a treat because we’ve had fajitas the last couple times we’ve had a catered lunch so we were fajita-ed out. Then we all gathered around the table to eat lunch while Paul went through his slideshow.

I took this snapshot after Paul’s uplifting presentation while Tim, one of our staff members, was sharing a few words with everyone. If only you guys could be a fly on our walls and witness the talent and brainpower gathered around our conference table. I tried to be discreet because everyone freaks out and personalities change once a camera appears, and well because it’s just a camera phone, I couldn’t get everyone in it, but it’s as close to a fly’s perspective as I could get. Overall, it was a great meeting and a great day to be at Webdex.

Google Social Circle Articles

February 12th, 2010 by Paul Slack

Vanessa found a couple of good articles about Google Social Circle from Search Engine Land. The first article is an in-depth look at Social Circle while it is still in its Beta phase and is very time consuming so make sure to give yourself time to read. The second article was released this last month when Social Circle came out of Beta and it discusses updates to it.?

Google Buzz… Crackle… Pop… Fizzle…

February 12th, 2010 by Kristine Macabare

Google Announced Buzz in February 2010.

Earlier this week, Google announced their latest social networking tool, Google Buzz. Google Buzz allows users to post longer statuses and tap into their other social networks such as Twitter, Flickr, Picasa, and even a user’s own blog.

Where were you 5 years ago, Google Buzz?

And yes, the instant I learned about this new Google service, I signed up. But as some early adopters noticed, it would be a while before it would actually show up in their Gmail account. It finally appeared in mine the following morning (Vanessa, our resident SEO copywriter, received access to hers later that afternoon). When I logged in, I only had 1 person who had connected to me. It was a lonely launch party. This morning, however, I noticed I had 4 followers so knowing I’m not a complete social pariah is a little more comforting :)

Winter Wonderland at Webdex

February 11th, 2010 by Kristine Macabare

A view of I-35E in Carrollton from our conference room.

Hopefully you all are safe and warm wherever you are in the DFW area. Everyone here at Webdex made it safely to the office this morning. There’s a section of the field next door that’s actually flooded with rain water from earlier this week. Ice skating, anyone?
